During the last Shopify Editions in the summer of 2023, Shopify announced a minor update, which had a major impact on many merchants. The platform finally supports discount combinations (and stacking) with almost no limitations.
Previously, the big limitation was that you couldn't combine order-level discounts with product-level discounts. There was a way to overcome it through a third-party app called Stackable Discounts, but you had to pay $20 monthly for the subscription.
What are the supported discount combinations in Shopify checkout
The most important combination that is now finally working is the order-level discount and product-level discount. This means your customers can get a discount for a specific product and still apply their sitewide welcome discount. It doesn't matter whether the discount value is in percentage or absolute amount. And on top of that, they can add a free shipping discount.
One checkout can even have multiple order-level discount codes applied. But there is always only one product-level discount (for the particular product) and one free shipping discount.
The allowed combinations are listed in the table below.
Remember always to set the allowed combinations in the discount settings.
What discount combinations are still not allowed
The only useful combination that is now missing are multiple product-level (i.e., order line item) discounts. You can also have only one free shipping discount, but there is no reason why someone would need more per single checkout.
Also, keep in mind the total level of used discounts per order:
- Maximum of 5 discounts per product and order (including automatic discounts)
- Maximum of 1 free shipping discount
Conclusion
The latest Shopify discounts update resolves one of the major issues merchants always had. It's finally possible to combine order-level with product line item discounts. That's a huge step forward. It's done in a fully native way without any apps, and the user experience is really good (as always with Shopify). For more details about the combination logic, check the section "Considerations for discount combinations" in the Shopify Help Center.
It's also worth noting the new allowed combinations work the same on all Shopify plans, including Shopify Basic.
The missing use cases are rather minor, and I expect most businesses to be satisfied with the latest setup. The only drawback could be the sales channel – these native combinations are allowed only on the Online Store channel. Other sales channels and draft orders still allow only one discount per order.
