How Candy Rack helped DFTBA store generate $6,300 in just three weeks

One of the key metrics we follow internally is how Candy Rack performs when used on the store, and how much actual business it is bringing to the store. We don’t care about how many installs or users the app has, we really care about whether the app actually works or not. Simply put, this is because we realize we can only succeed on Shopify in the long-term if merchants are truly happy with our app.

DFTBA Candy Rack

Among the several stores we have gained over the few days since we launched Candy Rack, there were a few which made us really happy. This is because we saw a substantial amount of business generated thanks to upselling via our app.

We decided to put together a short case study and DFTBA team agreed. It’s worth noting they agreed completely for free without any special attention. They are our regular (happy) customer.

Don’t Forget To Be Awesome

One of those stores is a cool brand called Don’t Forget To Be Awesome (DFTBA). DFTBA is not a typical online store. They offer clothing, posters, and other merchandising designed by independent creators. Thanks to DFTBA many artists, musicians, and entertainers can pursue their dreams and continue funding their productions.

DFTBA marketing team found our app on the Shopify App Store, installed it and created 80 different offers! And what is really awesome, they did all this without any help from our side. That pretty much proves we have done a good job designing the app UI, which is simple and easy to use.

Almost immediately we saw a great performance from the upsells. And it didn’t take long until we saw the $1,000 mark being passed, and then $2,000, and so on. In three weeks the Candy Rack upsells did over $6,300! That’s a fantastic result and we are really happy to help DFTBA store owners grow their business.

A Few Thoughts About Candy Rack and Shopify Upselling From Brandi Jessup

Brandi is a member of the DFTBA team. She acts as Creator Liason communicating with artists and creators and helping them learn how to sell. We have asked her a few questions regarding Shopify upselling and our app.

Why did you choose Candy Rack over dozens of other upsell apps on Shopify? Are you happy with your choice?

While the app is new, it had several 5 star reviews including great reviews of the customer service which is incredibly important to us. It integrated seamlessly with our store and the clean design fit the design of our shop. We actually tested several apps simultaneously and Candy Rack was the only one that showed real results.

We are very happy with our choice. Along with the sales increase we worked with customer service to get more detailed analytics that really help us tailor our upsells to our audience. The turn-around was super quick at a busy time of year and we really appreciate them working with us to get us everything we need.

What is your upsell strategy?

We represent over 100 online creators so our strategy is tailored to their products and their audiences. We offer lower priced products like pins and decals maid by the same creators customers are shopping for as well as products from creators with similar audiences. (Products from comedy podcasts upsold with products from other comedy podcasts or youtube channels, education with education, etc.)

We have also had success upselling higher price products and bundles with specific creators.

Is there something we could improve in the app?

The only thing is continuing to offer more comprehensive analytics, but those have improved even in the last few weeks :D.

Would you recommend Candy Rack to other Shopify merchants?

Absolutely!

About DFTBA: From CEO Hank Green

Creators and Communities

DFTBA.com helps creators make a living with high-quality products and service for their communities and supporters. Every creator, every product, and every sale matters.

Why Do We Do This?

Back in 2008, when I started this company with my friend Alan, it was a kinda weird idea that people would buy albums and shirts and posters from people on the internet. As we’ve grown, we’ve worked with (and continue to work with) some of the biggest creators in online media.

But we also are still a small team that takes every transaction seriously because this company is run by creators and we know that the most important relationship is between the creator and their community. DFTBA cares about that relationship first, which is why every transaction and every product matters so much to us.

We want people to be able to show their excitement and enthusiasm, and we want as many people to be able to create professionally as possible. We are fans and creators as well.

Every Product

We think about product development every day. Once you get into it, it’s easy to get obsessed. How consistent is a shirt’s sizing? Are we looking for a heavier weight, durable shirt, or a lighter, softer fabric? Who are our suppliers, and do they treat their employees and the environment well?

We think about these things with every product we make, and we’re even able to directly oversee certain stages of production. There’s nothing like watching a dream you had become a reality. We also work with fan artists who never knew their product would become real. We make sure that every fan artist receives a royalty for every sale they make to thank them for their enthusiasm and skill.

Every Customer

Just as creators are nothing without their communities, we are nothing without our customers. We take that responsibility extremely seriously. Of course, sometimes things go wrong. You might get the wrong size, or a package may be lost, and when those things happen we do everything we can to make it right as quickly as possible. Our customer support team is always working to make sure things are going right, especially when they go wrong.

Every Creator

The internet has made “professional creator” a much more common job and that’s extremely exciting and selling cool stuff to communities is something every creator can do to help support their work. That doesn’t mean that every creator belongs at DFTBA.com. We work with mid- to large-level creators because that’s where our model works best. We keep stock on hand (rather than print on demand) and strive to send the highest possible cut to the creators we work with in order to support them.

The only thing more important than that to us is that the customers are well supported, because, ultimately, we know that every creator we work with cares more about their community than their paycheck, that’s why they’re so great at what they do.
